A Little About Sequim…
Sequim, Washington – located on the North Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, has become a favorite place to visit and live because of its beauty and friendly small-town atmosphere. Called the “blue hole” by many airline pilots because of its unique weather pattern, this gorgeous valley is safely tucked behind the beautiful Olympic Mountains to the southwest, which protects it from extreme weather patterns. Sequim has also become the “Lavender Capital of the World” – and each year, holds an annual Lavender Festival featuring street vendors with a plethora of lavender products, along with a lavender farm tour of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.
With a history of pioneers who changed the desert valley with its cactus into a fertile farm area by the extraordinary efforts of building irrigation ditches from the mountains into the valley, to its present-day hobby farms, barns, and homes that make the area so inviting, Sequim is one place you’ll want to visit soon!
The City of Sequim (pronounced “S’Kwim”), and the surrounding Sequim-Dungeness Valley, is
located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the north coast of Washington State near the base
of the Olympic Mountains. It is located along the Dungeness Riverand is known for its “rainshadow,” which provides for more sunshine and less precipitation than the rest of the Olympic Peninsula, much of which is a temperate rain forest.
Sequim is about two hours away from the metropolitan cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia and is a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula and its numerous tourist attractions.
Mountains & Water – the Best of Both Worlds!
To the south lies the awesomely beautiful Olympic Mountains. To the north, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, leading into the Puget Sound from the Pacific Ocean. Who could ask for a more beautiful place? It is indeed, “God’s country”!
A growing community with a “small-town” atmosphere…
Sequim is growing. The town itself is relatively small with approximately 6,000 residents. The Sequim-Dungeness Valley surrounding it has a population of approximately 28,000. Within the city limits, there is much growth taking place, including some major shopping centers, which brings with them jobs and availability of goods and services without having to travel long distances. The Valley area consists of homes and farms. The Valley – in days gone by – consisted primarily of dairy farms. Most of those have gone now, but there are parcels of land protected from housing subdivisions, and the North Olympic Trail which offers much in the way of scenery, exercise and fresh air. Read history tidbits here.
Sequim is an hour and a half from the Seattle ferries and half an hour from the ferry to Victoria, British Columbia. Nestled between the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the town of Sequim is about 4 miles from the shore and the famous Dungeness Spit and 10 miles from the borders of Olympic National Park.
The Weather
We live in a truly unique spot on the Peninsula. Rainfall increases 1 inch per mile going west from Sequim, and almost as much going East. Sequim has less rain than San Francisco, less than an inch more than L.A. or Salt Lake City! We average 306 days a year with at least some sunshine! OK, so there are no banana plantations here! Things aren’t that warm. We frequently have cloudy days, but when our skies are cloudy, most of our neighbors are getting soaked!
